Houston we've had a problem

Am 7. August 2025 starb James Arthur „Jim“ Lovell, Jr. Ein Idol, ein Held meiner Kindheit.
Als ich diese Nachricht las, kamen unendlich viele Erinnerungen zurück. Erinnerungen an eine Zeit, in der man mitten in der Nacht von seinem Vater geweckt wurde, um aufmerksam und neugierig krisselige, undeutliche schwarz-weiß-Bilder im TV zu bestaunen, deren englische Kommentare man nicht verstand.
So saß ich auch am 20. Juli 1969 vor dem Fernseher und beobachtete Neil Armstrong's erste Schritte auf dem Mond, während mein Bruder mir anhand eines selbst gebauten Modells alle technischen Schritte zu erklären versuchte.
Auch wenn ich damals nur einen Bruchteil verstand, so brannten sich die Bilder in mein Gedächtnis.

Die Nachricht vom Tode Jim Lovell's machte mich traurig. Nicht wegen seines Todes an sich. Mit 97 Jahren hatte er wirklich ein langes Leben. Nein, es ist mehr das Ende einer Epoche, einer Generation. Mein Vater war ein Jahr jünger als Jim Lovell. Also geht es nur um eine Generation vor mir. Und diese Erkenntnis rückt alles deutlich näher.

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park

Cumberland Falls, sometimes called the Little Niagara, the Niagara of the South, or the Great Falls, is a waterfall on the Cumberland River in southeastern Kentucky. Spanning the river at the border of McCreary and Whitley counties, the waterfall is the central feature of Cumberland Falls State Resort Park and is part of the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves designated Wild River System.

For me, this place in Kentucky has something magical about it. A place to linger and hike.
This area should be avoided during peak season. It's a very busy place.
