Women Lead the Way for Gorillas

This month is International Women’s Month and as a female-founded and female-led organization, we are committed to helping build the next generation of female conservationists in Africa and beyond. We’re excited to tell you about Carine Uwamahoro, Axelle Kamanzi and Marie Fiedele Tuyisenge, three Rwandan women who are advancing their scientific careers through their work at the Fossey Fund.

A new baby in Mafunzo’s group!

Last month we were excited to welcome a new infant in Mafunzo’s group. 22-year-old female Taraja, who is already mom to 3-year-old Suraurwanda, gave birth to a healthy baby! As Mafunzo is the only silverback in the group, we can confirm that he is the infant’s father. This brings Mafunzo’s group to 10 group members, three of which are infants.

We are excited to see Mafunzo’s group grow and even more excited to see how Suraurwanda, who loves to play, handles becoming a big brother for the first time!
