Why World Gorilla Day is extra special this year:

World Gorilla Day, on Sept. 24, is one of our very favorite days! This year, we have SO MUCH to celebrate: the 40th anniversary of Dian Fossey’s book Gorillas in the Mist, the 35th anniversary of the feature film based on the book starring Sigourney Weaver as Dian and the premiere of an exclusive Discovery Channel special on the building of our new Ellen DeGeneres Campus in Rwanda. Not to mention, World Gorilla Day commemorates the founding of Dian Fossey’s groundbreaking study of the mountain gorillas in 1967.

    • Mountain gorilla silverback Ishavu, who previously showed little interest in leadership, is stepping up his leadership game to help his group thrive! The ladies love him: His impressive size, striking appearance and strong personality seem to give him quite the knack for attracting well-known females to the group.
  • We think that these new names are PERFECT.
    • If you love adorable baby gorillas, be sure to check out our story on the infants who received their new names at this month’s Kwita Izina naming ceremony in Rwanda. Each name is carefully chosen and has a special meaning connected to the ongoing conservation efforts in Rwanda. Translations of their names reveal magnificent meanings, such as “blessing,” “redeemer,” “favored” and “long life.” Notice a theme?
